Kate Sherman
Biography
Kate Sherman is a self-taught artist based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Known for her dynamic abstract paintings, Sherman blends the precision of wet on wet brush work with an organic flow of hand and body movements, creating what she terms “wave painting”.
“I have been a self-taught artist since 2022. I have participated in a couple of art festivals, but I mostly paint just for me.
I have changed from one medium to the next and painting became my favourite medium, and the one I have decided to stay with. I consider myself a ‘self-taught’ artist. Essentially, it means I have had very little formal training in art/painting. I took art in high school, and very briefly in college, before switching to psychology for some reason, but since then, everything I’ve learnt has been through self-guided learning, using books, videos, informal online courses, and a large dose of trial-and-error. I chose what to learn and when, and at what pace. I wasn’t following a curriculum, or being told exactly what to study”.
Sherman mixes additives into her paints to create fluidity before pouring it onto a canvas. Her canvas acts as her secondary mixing palette. She has uses tools such as a fan, squeegees, large brushes and other objects to swoosh the paint across her canvases. “I paint with some oils but mostly acrylics. I love trying out and learning new ways to create. My emotions directly influence my work, from how I paint, when I paint, and the colours I choose. Combined, they express how I’m feeling at that specific moment. My latest series of wave paintings is inspired by my love of water and my many trips to the Mediterranean. Hours of joy and memories are brought to life on my canvases.”
